KorCom Porter Novelli releases “Green Reputation Index” survey results
-
KorCom Porter Novelli Institute of Communication Strategies and Colorado State
University develop green management evaluation index
- Survey covers a total of 66 domestic companies in 16 industries categorized
by KORCHAM
(December 12, 2012) PR consulting company, KorCom Porter Novelli (CEO Chris
Yim) developed the Green Reputation Index (GRI) which measures a company’s
green management activity and released the results of the GRI survey with
Chosun Biz on December 12 at the Plaza Hotel Diamond Hall in Seoul, Korea.
The GRI was developed with the cooperation of Colorado State University
professor Kim Jang Yul to promote timely proactive green management by domestic
companies and to evaluate internal and external stakeholders’ awareness of
domestic companies’ overall green management.
What differentiates the GRI from standard environmental indexes is that it was
composed to reflect an array of interrelated activities that are required to
secure green reputation, and unlike similar surveys that are more focused on
deducing financial performance, the GRI utilizes non-financial performances to
evaluate social reputation which also makes it possible to measure the
relationship level with key stakeholders. In particular, the GRI is expected to
conjure an effective way of securing a positive reputation through the
evaluation of a company’s internal and external communications.
The GRI is composed of four dimensions: management philosophy, management
system, management performance, and communications; as well as 44 other sub
factors. The survey was conducted to select the top of each industry. The 2012
survey was conducted by evaluating 100 professionals, 1,000 members of the
general public, and press releases (50%/30%/20% respectively), and covered a
total of 66 domestic companies in 16 different industries, as classified by
KORCHAM.
According to the survey, Yuhan Kimberly, Korean Airlines, Lotte Department
Store, E-Mart, Hyundai Motors, POSCO, GS Caltex, and Samsung Electronics had
the highest GRI in their respective industries.
Kim Jang Yul, professor at the Colorado State University, stated, “The Green
Reputation Index was developed to evaluate internal and external stakeholders’
awareness of domestic companies’ green management.” Kim added, “Because it is
the first time the evaluation was initiated, there could be sections that may
need to be supplemented,” adding, “If the recent evaluation shows that there
are sections that need to be changed, we will go through research and
verification stages to continuously improve the system."
Meanwhile, Kim Sang Hyup, the Presidential Secretary for Green Growth, along
with several officials from the Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Land
Transportation and Maritime Affairs, and the Ministry of Knowledge Economy,
will be attending the releasing of the survey results, where the companies with
the highest GRI in each respective industry will be awarded. The releasing of
the results will be done jointly with Chosun Biz.
